Ecosia is a not-for-profit search engine that uses its revenue from searches to plant trees.
Whenever you use it to search for something, it will contribute to planting trees.
On average, it takes about 45 searches to plant a tree. Ecosia does not store your search data or build a profile. The searches are anonymized, and your browsing sessions are not tracked.
This search engine is also available as a Firefox add-on. It can then be set as a default search engine. Download and install it from the Firefox add-ons page here.
Click on Yes to set it as the default search engine for Firefox.
You can also set it to run in Private Windows.
Click on the Ecosia icon to open the search engine homepage.
A cool feature is the number counter at the bottom of the search box that shows the trees planted through Ecosia. To know more about this, click on the menu option and select How Ecosia works.
To change the search settings, click on Settings from the drop-down menu. You can then change the search region, safe search settings, language, and other options.
Click on the Save button to save the changes.
Also, initially, the tree icon at the top-right is 0 (number of searches by you) when you are using Ecosia for the first time. As soon as you start searching with Ecosia, the number changes. So, that number is the times you have used searched with Ecosia. Click on that icon for details.
You can also sign in to see details but logging in or registration is not necessary for using Ecosia.
The bell icon shows updates on different Ecosia environmental initiatives.
To turn off Ecosia for Firefox, right-click the add-on icon and select Manage Extension.
You can then disable the add-on or remove it.
Also, to switch between different search engines in Firefox, Swift Selection is a good option to use.
All done. Happy green searching.
