Customizing Desktop Icon Placement in Ubuntu 24.04: A Quick Guide 

Ubuntu 24.04, released in April 2024, is the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) version of the popular Linux distribution. This release continues Ubuntu’s tradition of providing a user-friendly, stable, and feature-rich operating system. It offers enhanced performance, updated software packages, and refined user interface elements, catering to both newcomers and experienced Linux users. 

Customizing Desktop Icon Placement in Ubuntu 24.04 

One of the noticeable changes is the default placement of new desktop icons. Unlike other operating systems like Windows, new icons appear in the bottom-right corner of the desktop. This change might be disorienting for some users, particularly those transitioning from Windows.  

Fortunately, Ubuntu provides an easy way to customize this setting: 

Click on the Activities button or press the Super key. Type Settings and click on the Settings app icon.

 

In the Settings window, scroll down and click on Ubuntu Desktop in the left sidebar. Look for the Desktop Icons section. 

Find the Position of New Icons option. Click on the dropdown menu next to it (it should currently show Bottom Right). 

Select from four options: Top Left ,Top Right , Bottom Left or Bottom Right.

Your selection takes effect immediately. No need to restart or log out. 

After making this change, all new icons added to your desktop will appear in your chosen location.
