If you’re a Linux Mint user (especially with the Xfce desktop environment), you’re likely familiar with Thunar, the default file manager. It’s lightweight, fast, and gets the job done. One of its handy features is the ability to open multiple directories in tabs within a single window, much like a web browser.

However, by default, these tabs only show the name of the current directory, not its full path. This can get confusing quickly if you have multiple directories with the same name open (like ~/Pictures/Vacation and /media/backup/Pictures/Vacation). You might find yourself clicking back and forth, trying to remember which tab corresponds to which location.

Luckily, there’s a super simple fix! Thunar has a built-in option to display the full directory path right in the tab title, making navigation much clearer.

Here’s how to enable it:

Open Thunar File Manager by launching it from your application menu or panel. Go to the menu bar at the top of the Thunar window, click on Edit, and then select Preferences.

In the Preferences window that appears, click on the Behavior tab. Look for the checkbox option labeled Show full directory paths in tab titles. Click the box to enable it.

That’s it! Immediately, you should see the change take effect.

Any directory tabs you have open, or any new ones you create, will now display their complete path (e.g., /home/yourusername/Documents instead of just Documents).

This small tweak makes managing multiple open directory tabs significantly easier, helping you keep track of exactly where you are in your file system at a glance.

Happy navigating!
