Microsoft Edge, like many modern browsers, regularly receives updates to enhance security, performance, and features. However, these updates can consume significant bandwidth, which can be a concern if you’re on a metered internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot or a limited data plan.
Fortunately, Edge browser provides a simple setting to manage whether updates are downloaded over these connections, helping you save precious data.
Why Control Updates on Metered Connections?
By default, Edge might attempt to download updates whenever they’re available, regardless of your network type. If you’re connected to a metered network, this can lead to:
- Increased data consumption: Large updates can quickly eat into your data allowance, potentially leading to overage charges or slower speeds.
- Slower browsing: While updates are downloading in the background, your overall internet speed might be impacted.
- Unwanted charges: If you’re traveling or using a roaming connection, unexpected data usage can result in high costs.
By disabling updates over metered connections, you retain control over when and how Edge updates, ensuring you only download them when you’re on a more stable and cost-effective network.
Here is how:
You have two convenient ways to access the relevant settings in Microsoft Edge:
Method 1: Using the Address Bar
Open your Microsoft Edge browser and type the following into the address bar, then press Enter:
edge://settings/help

Method 2: Through the Menu
In the top-right corner of the Edge browser window, you’ll see a horizontal ellipsis icon (three dots). Click on this icon to open the main menu.
From the dropdown list, navigate to and click on About Microsoft Edge > Help and feedback.

Both of these will take you to the About section of the settings.
Here, you’ll find information about your current Edge version and options related to updates. Look for an option labeled Download Updates over metered connections.

To prevent Edge from downloading updates when you’re on a metered network, ensure the toggle switch next to Download Updates over metered connections is in the off position.
When the toggle is off, Edge will not check for or download updates when it detects that you are connected to a metered network. This is the desired setting for data saving.
When the toggle is on, Edge will check for and download updates even when you are on a metered connection.
For the changes to take effect, you will need to restart your Microsoft Edge browser.
What Happens Next?
With this setting configured to Off, Microsoft Edge will intelligently manage its updates. When you are on a limited or metered network (e.g., a mobile hotspot, a cellular data connection through a laptop), Edge will refrain from automatically checking for and downloading updates. This ensures that your data allowance is preserved for your essential browsing activities.
When you connect to an unmetered network, such as your home Wi-Fi or a stable broadband connection, Edge will then resume its normal update checking and downloading processes, ensuring your browser remains up-to-date and secure.
By following these simple steps, you can effectively manage your data usage and prevent unexpected consumption when using Microsoft Edge on metered connections.
Happy browsing.
